NEW YORK (United Nations) – The President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune highlighted, Tuesday in New York (United States), the important achievements made by Algeria in terms of sustainable development goals (SDGs). In his speech during the work of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly (GA), President Tebboune affirmed that Algeria had adopted “the sustainable development plan as a national priority within the framework of the whole Government strategies and programs.
Sustainable Development Goals
This approach, specifies President Tebboune, has made it possible to “take big steps and obtain convincing results in the process of sustainable development objectives, particularly in the sectors of education, health, construction, electricity and water.
Challenges and International Solidarity
“More than eight years after the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Addis Ababa Action Plan, several developing countries still face challenges that require greater international solidarity to a better world and an efficient and fair economic model to achieve sustainable development goals,” observed President Tebboune.
Promotion of Human Rights (achievements made by Algeria)
Referring to the promotion of human rights, the President of the Republic noted that “Algeria, which had the support and confidence of member countries in the Human Rights Council to obtain membership, is party to international human rights treaties. It works to strengthen its cooperation and continue coordination with the various bodies concerned with human rights and the universal periodic review (UPR) mechanisms. He recalled, in this regard, that Algeria had submitted, in November 2022, its fourth national report within the framework of this mechanism.
Conclusion
Algeria “is deeply convinced that respect and promotion of human rights are the cornerstone of any credible political system, and works to strengthen them by all possible means”.
Algeria has been committed to sustainable development since the early 2000s. The country has implemented several laws, regulations, and strategic measures to achieve this goal. Some of these measures include the National Strategy for the Environment (SNE), the National Action Plan for Environment and Sustainable Development 2035 (PNAE-DD), and programs for energy transition and the development of renewable energies.
